Currently Airing Spotlight: Tears to Tiara

Posted: 16 Sep 2009 02:05 PM PDT

Today, I’ll take a look at the currently airing anime, “Tears to Tiara”

Tears to Tiara is an anime adapation from a popular video game of the same name. It’s scheduled for 26 episodes and has 24 currently released at the time I type this. The genres for the series include heavy Fantasy, Action, Adventure, Drama and some minor elements. Themes in the show are slightly bishounen and harem-ish, while relying heavily on War. They also incorporate (and this is what I like) multiple different mythologies. Like the coming of the Golden, Silver, Bronze ages.

The plot is set in a land during a medieval-like era of magic and sorcery. Tears to Tiara unfolds with the Divine Empire's rise (and I have to say, they’re pretty much modeled off of the Roman Empire with the senate and king, the main guy sent to harass them early on is named Gaius even -which is a bonus to me, as I like Roman stories) to its power as it conquers and rules lands far and wide. They also have a zero-tolerance policy for any of their lands, if they go even slightly against the empire, they are destroyed by the might of the Imperial Army, no questions asked.

On the island of Erin, still ruled by the Ancient Kingdom, the Gaelic people are attempting to rescue a priestess named Riannon before she is sacrificed to revive protagonist of series, who also happens to be “The Demon King” Arawn. Although the ritual fails and Riannon survives, the seal imprisoning the demon king is broken and Arawn is resurrected.

Armed with mysterious and devastating powers and a human's demeanor, Arawn joins Riannon, her brother and First Warrior Arthur, as well as their team of fighters comprising a woman swordsman, an extremely headstrong archer named Morgan, and a quintet of magical Elves, in the epic struggle against the Divine Empire, and to gain their freedom back so they can live in peace.

Is Arawn a demon king? Will he bring about destruction, that is foretold in the prophecies? Will the Empire finally meet it’s end? Tune in and find out.

This is the first series for fantasy that has really held my attention since Tales of the Abyss has ended. I’ve quite thoroughly enjoyed the series, and there’s only two more episodes left to air. It has made an impression on me, so I don’t hesitate when I give this series a 4.25/5. While it’s great, I hope the ending will make it even greater. For a game-to-anime translation, this show deserves the rating I give it. Usually game-to-animes don’t tend to work, but I find this one does, just as Tales of the Abyss has done before it.

Happy Watching!
