Writer’s Spotlight: Clannad

Posted: 01 Sep 2009 02:25 AM PDT

Today, I’ll post an edited review from one our forum members, AndyCH92. He sent me this review noticing we lack romance reviews, so without further ado, here is Clannad (Poster inset)

clannad

Clannad is a visual novel that has been adapted to anime. It has two seasons Clannad, and Clannad: After story. The first concentrating in the main character's school life, and the latter as an active member of society after having graduated. Clannad consists of 22 episodes with one special, whereas After Story consists of 23 episodes with a final recap episode. Both series also have an OVA each, with an alternate ending. This is a mixed two-part review.

It is really not absolutely necessary to watch both the series to understand it, as you can just watch the first series, and be happy (or unhappy with the ending) but as After Story spans much deeper into the story it is highly recommended (at least by me) that you watch both so you can see what happened to who and so on.

Clannad's genres consist of Romance and Drama. The main theme is romance in the fact of girls that fall in love with him, and the other main theme being drama that comes with that territory. The series makes a point of showing the importance of family (as early as the first series, and much more relevant in After Story), teenagers growth to adulthood (making important choices that will shape their future, dreams they must not forget), as well as the hardships of life (the struggle for a living and supporting a family, losing precious people).

The main plot for Clannad begins at the beginning of the school year in 2003, where Okazaki Tomoya meets a delicate, unconfident female student named Furukawa Nagisa who is a year older and befriends her. She is in the same year due to the fact that she was absent most of last year because of her delicate health, and doesn't have any friends due to this fact.

Nagisa wants to participate in the drama club activities; however she first has to reform it. With the help of Tomoya, Nagisa gains more confidence along the series, as well as a number of friends, and can finally act in the school festival. Tomoya and Nagisa fall in love and decide to date at the end of the first series.

In After story, Tomoya graduates from school with the rest of his friends, with the exception of Nagisa (who is yet again sick). He starts working in the bakery Nagisa's parents run and waits for Nagisa to graduate as she has to repeat the year again. They get married after this and Nagisa becomes pregnant. They discover the birth will have complications and Tomoya questions what he should do. This is where the story really gets interesting, too old to be teenagers but too young to be parents, the story revolves around misery and depression at the thought of what may happen.

I really enjoyed watching this series, and made me cry a few times too. You can get in touch with your human emotions, and really start to think about what's important in life. Be it Love, or family, this is a great anime as it is one that leaves you a message. You should always fight and persevere, and keep going no matter how hard things may seem, there is always an answer, even if it's not what you thought of at first. You will get into the story very easily and can feel identified with the characters, or the situations that arise between them. There are also a few laughs, which makes the series easier to

watch, as it is not all the time drama/romance.

I give this series a 9.5/10 as it is really good in depicting human situations, and emotions. And also something most of us have experienced: love.

I hope you enjoyed his review of the show, and that it might get you wanting to watch it. I myself am not big on romance as you readers might have noticed, but even this review kind of makes me curious about the genre. Happy watching!
